[Review] What Makes "War of Worldcraft" Worth It

September 11th, 2009 · No Comments · Review

The cover art for the Black Wyrn adventure "War of Worldcraft".I’m not a huge fan of Black Wyrm Games’ new adventure, “War of Worldcraft”. The plot, while an interesting concept, isn’t really original, and its execution isn’t too great either. The art doesn’t stand out in any way, especially compared to the amazing cover art on the other Black Wyrm product I’ve seen, Foxbat for President. Overall, I wasn’t impressed by it. But there’s still a few things inside that make it worth the cheap price of admission.

  1. The NPCs -In the Walmart knock-off (more on that later) and in the MMO, there are a lot of NPCs with interesting personality quirks. No uninteresting people here, just annoying shopkeepers, mobsters, and “massive overshoppers” are given quick one paragraph write-ups that are interesting reads (and perfect for shemping).
  2. The Store – The first part of the adventure takes place at the Maxi-Mart, an obvious Walmart parody, where the expansion to a popular MMO Megaworld is being released. With a great map and an awesome, four page key describing it (plus encouragement to essentially tear apart the store), this is an awesome set location that’s great to use in other scenarios.
  3. The Plot Seeds – As with Foxbat for President, there’s a section dedicated to plot seeds. Although there aren’t as many, it still has plenty of idea fodder for you to steal. Also, in the detailed descriptions of the villains at the end (again, similar to Foxbat), each of them have three or four plot seeds to use. Granted, at least one for each villain is “He/She falls in love with a PC”, but despite that redundancy there are still some really interesting ones there.
  4. The Cheap Price of Admission – Alright, I mentioned this already, but the PDF is only $6.00 at RPGNow and the print copy is only $10. Even if you’re just interested in the above stuff, but not the adventure itself, that’s a pretty great deal.
