[The Savage World Ends With You] An Introduction

July 26th, 2009 · No Comments · Uncategorized

So, the Savage Worlds game I’m planning using the Savage Worlds rules is based off of the Nintendo DS game The World Ends With You. Let me tell you a little bit about The World Ends With You: it is, without a doubt, one of my favorite games ever.

Okay, sure, to call the story a “railroad” would be the understatement of the century, and some most of the characters are the same fare you get in any JRPG and… I’m not really doing a good job of selling this to you am I? In TWEWY’s defense, some of this may be coming from the fact that I just rewatched the Zero Punctuation review to remind myself that it isn’t as good as I like to think it is. I liked it. A lot. So obviously, the logical progression from “I really like this video game” is “let’s turn it into a tabletop RPG!”.

I think that turning it into a tabletop RPG will eliminate some of those problems; my players will choose how the story goes, not Square-Enix, and the characters will be as cliché as my players want. Also, it will give me a chance to try out some new techniques; I’ll be posting the specifics about what my goals are later this week (maybe tomorrow? I don’t quite know yet).

So come back… sometime when I tell you how I’m using TSWEWY to “expand my horizons” (if you played the game, you would get it).

EDIT: Okay, so looking at this post again, I realized I completely forgot to actually tell you anything about TWEWY. So I’m going to go ahead and do that here:

TWEWY tells the story of the anti-social teenager Neku who wakes up one day in the popular shopping district of Shibuya with (surprise!) amnesia. He soon learns that he is in something known as The Reaper’s Game (shortened to The Game), where those who have died are given an opportunity to gain back their right to life. He has to make a pact with a partner and learn to work together in order to win The Game and return to life.

This capsule summary doesn’t begin to do it justice, and actually makes it sound even more cliché than it actually is, but the game itself is full of unpredictable twists and amazing revelations. Hmm, maybe I could go into marketing…
