[Science] What Makes a Geek a Geek? Scientists Have the Answer.

April 1st, 2009 · 2 Comments · Uncategorized

Geeks are social outcasts, but scientists at MIT have recently discovered that it’s not only thing that sets us apart from the average Joe. Recently, it has become apparent to some that the differences go further, all the way into our very brain.

Although the legend of people only using 10% of their brain is not entirely accurate, there are some portions that are only available to specific people in specific ways – namely, a small section of the brain close to the hippocampus. This small section, called the archiointuox, is what gives people the ability to intuitively grasp certain concepts, ranging from as diverse uses as understand complex sports strategies, to, in the last 50 years or so, technology. Lead scientist Daisuke Shiatori had this to say about the discovery:

This kind of development is not new to the human race. There have always been parts of the brain that were on for some people and off for others. However, this is the first time that an otherwise minor part of the brain has adapted to human creation as opposed to that of nature.

Since discovering this, scientists have tracked close to 50 different abilites that are derived from this portion of the brain. Here are some of the ones that will interest allgeektout readers:

  • Are you the go-to guy for help with the latest gadget? Oftentimes, you will find that you are able to quickly set it up without having ever touched it before. This is because of a mutation in the archiointuox that allows you to quickly identify the easiest solution to any problem, combined with the good grasp of technology it gives you.
  • Do you like staying up late, rolling dice and pretending you’re an elf? In addition to a math adaptation in your brain, you also have the intuitive ability to immerse yourself in a fantasy world, even if you often break the illusion with game mechanics.
  • Will you often spend hours on the internet, reading the latest stories? You have PX398, a chemical put out by your archiointuox that compells you to find news and deliver it to other people.
