In the most recent issue of Kobold Quarterly, there is an all new race for Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition called the kitsune, based upon Japanese mythology. Kitsune are fox like creatures with multiple tails who can shift between fox and human forms, and the myths about them have many interesting possibilities, like the Kyubi, or the nine-tailed fox who has taken “The Longest Step” and grown their ninth (and final) tail. I’ve written a racial epic destiny for those of you who want their own kitsune characters to take the Longest Step.
Note: The use of this epic destiny requires the race write-up in Kobold Quarterly Issue 9.
KYUBI
You have mastered the Longest Step, and grown your ninth tail; you have unlimited access to fox magic, and are a servant to none but the ten thousand tailed fox.
PREREQUISITE: 21st level, Kitsune
Most kitsune adventurers grow all nine tails, but only you have mastered the power that comes with them. It has taken you many years to achieve this, but at last the power that has lay dormant within you is unleashed. Your fur becomes white and gold, and even in humanoid form you begin to take on a more foxlike appearance; your teeth and nails become razor sharp, and your eyes begin to glow with an impossible brilliance.
Other kitsune will be told stories of your greatness, and they will look up to you as a shining paragon of what all of them should strive for. They will bow down to you as a leader, only second to the true leader of the kitsune, the ten thousand tailed fox.
IMMORTALITY
With such power, your path can take you many places. Though kitsune are long lived, even those who have gained their ninth tail must eventually move on; sometimes to another plane, hoping to find new secrets of power, and sometimes to the void that awaits all living creatures; death, which your search for power has taught you to embrace rather than fear.
Consort to the Ten Thousand Tailed Fox – The luckiest of the Kyubi will be honored by becoming a servant to the Ten Thousand Tailed Fox, the first and only kitsune to ascend beyond nine tails. Perhaps she will teach you how to become even greater than you already are, should you be willing to follow her.
KYUBI FEATURES
Inner Fox (21st Level) – You no longer have to be in fox form to cast spells with the Fox magic descriptor.
Shining Star (24th Level) – Your spirit ball bonus can be added to any attack that you make, instead of just those with the Fox keyword.
Strength of the Nine Tails (30th Level) – You gain access to the following Fox magic powers in addition to your class powers: one Level 1 at-will power, one Level 5 daily power, and one Level 22 utility power.
