Recently it came to my knowledge that the D&D Insider no longer has “Coming Soon” pages for two of the tools that were going to be offered – the Map Builder and the Virtual Game Table. These had been visible for months, since 4th Edition launched, and I am not sure how recently they were taken down. My question is this – is Wizards of the Coast dropping the products, or are they just trying to hide the fact they aren’t finished yet?
I can’t help but feel that if they don’t release these two programs, that D&DI is finished. Right now, the 1 year subscription is $60 a year, and all they offer is a subscription to the Dungeon and Dragon magazines, as well as access to the Character Builder. While these are all fantastic, there are plenty of suitable replacements for the builder, and the magazine subscriptions alone are hardly worth the annual fee.
Hopefully WotC will come out with more information soon.
[EDIT] Realized this would be better labled as “Speculation”.
