Classic DOS games like Ultima and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? are fun, but DOSBox isn’t easy for everyone to set up. That’s where Boxer comes into play.
With Boxer, all you have to do is locate the file and drag it onto the enclosed application (conveniently named “Drop games here to install them”). Boxer immediately transforms them into a Mac friendly package, ready to play. It is as simple as that – no extra configuration needed, although for the more advanced there is the option. It even comes with a few games as examples, including Commander Keen: Goodbye, Galaxy!, which I remember playing from a while ago.
Unfortunately, this is a Mac OS X only program, so Windows users have to figure it out for themselves, but it is an incredibly useful tool, especially with DOS games so easy to find on sites like Abandonia and the DOS Games Archive. In fact, if you’ve downloaded any DOS games from Good Old Games or Steam, you can run those as well, as long as you have installed them on a Windows machine first and then transferred them over.
