[News] It's Not Over Yet – EA Keeps On Getting Sued

November 8th, 2008 · No Comments · News

Spore buyers aren’t the only EA fans annoyed about Digital Rights Management. It seems like the software giant has just been hit with two more major lawsuits about their DRM.

The first one is technically about Spore, but not about the full game – Richard Eldridge of Pennsylvania downloaded the (free) Spore Creature Creator and was shocked to discover that it contained DRM.

The inclusion of undisclosed, secretly installed DRM protection measures with a program that was freely distributed constitutes a major violation of computer owners’ absolute right to control what does and what does not get loaded onto their computers, and how their computers shall be used.

The other suit, though, is about none other than that huge simulation game, The Sims. Upon installing Bon Voyage, one of the many expansion packs to the Sims 2, Dianna Cortez of Missouri couldn’t backup any of her save files, and found that many of her previous backups were no longer compatible. The only way that she could fix the problem was by reformatting her entire hard drive – uninstalling Bon Voyage didn’t cut it. Game Politics says:

She [Cortez] accuses EA of engaging in ‘unfair business practices’ as well as conduct that is ‘immoral, unethical, oppressive [and] unscrupulous…’

Maybe when this all blows over, developers will have realized that including too much (or even any) DRM is really a bad idea.
