He’s done it – Richard Garriot, aka “Lord British” has made it to the Final Frontier. Taking off from the Baikonur space center in Russia, Lord British will land at the International Space Station on Tuesday, where he will begin doing numerous education outreach programs. In addition, he took with him the “Immortality Drive”, which carries DNA of such distinguished luminaries as Stephen Colbert, Stephen Hawking, and Kevin Rose, the co-founder of Digg.com. The Immortality Drive is supposed be act as Mankind’s last hope, though what good it will be to have digital DNA on a space station is beyond me. Richard Garriot is expected to stay on the ISS for ten days, at which point he will return to Earth.
Unfortunately, this comes at he same time as the announcement that the toilet on the ISS is not sucking up waste as it properly should. This is not the first time that this toilet, purported to cost around $19 million, has failed. A replacement will hopefully reach the ISS in November. Until then, the astronauts (and Lord British) will just have to cope.
